OKLCH Color Science & Dual Registers

Perceptual uniformity in OKLCH color space, dual visual registers, and zero-hardcoding design architecture.

OKLCH Color Science & Dual Registers

BOB-Astro completely abandons legacy RGB/HEX color models in favor of the OKLCH perceptual color space.

1. Why OKLCH?

Unlike sRGB and HSL:

  • Perceptual Uniformity: Equal numerical changes in Lightness ($L$) and Chroma ($C$) produce equal perceived visual changes.
  • Predictable Contrast: Ensures WCAG AAA contrast compliance across all hues without manual tweaking.
  • P3 Wide Gamut: Unlocks more vibrant, luminous highlights on modern displays.

2. Dual Visual Registers

BOB-Astro introduces Dual Visual Registers:

  1. Obsidian Dark Luxury:
    • Deep obsidian canvas (oklch(0.12 0.015 260)), subtly tinted toward the brand hue to eliminate flat unnatural blacks.
    • Ideal for luxury agency, creative studio, and futuristic tech products.
  2. Solar Paper Light Mode:
    • Tactile warm paper canvas (oklch(0.97 0.01 75)), with deep ink typography (oklch(0.18 0.02 75)).
    • Zero-flash toggling via data-theme="light" on <html />.

3. The 6 Mathematical Presets

All 6 presets are defined mathematically in src/config/site.config.ts:

  • Solar Amber: oklch(0.75 0.16 75)
  • Cyber Emerald: oklch(0.78 0.17 150)
  • Deep Cobalt: oklch(0.72 0.18 245)
  • Cosmic Crimson: oklch(0.70 0.22 25)
  • Quantum Violet: oklch(0.74 0.20 305)
  • Solar Paper: oklch(0.55 0.16 75)
